(Post 36) Planning- Ancillary Task 1- Digipak

ARE THERE ANY PARTICULAR CD COVERS YOU REMEMBER AND WHY DO YOU REMEMBER THESE?

I remember many CD covers due to my parents being big music fans and having book shelves full of CDs which I used to look through. The ones I can remember today include: Screamadelica (Primal Scream), Abbey road (The Beatles) and Nevermind (Nirvana). I remember these ones as they either attracted me at that age by being colourful and bold but I also remember some because they are famous and very unique. For example, Screamadelica had colours which attracted me, Abbey road is very famous so I see it about lots and Nevermind's cover is something that turns heads.

HOW IMPORTANT IS THE COVER OF A CD WHEN BUYING IT AND WHY?

I believe that nowadays, the album cover is not important at all, with technology and online albums people don't even have to see the cover before they can listen to them for free and see if they like it. in my opinion, most people now buy a CD or album online or in shop based on an artist rather than CD cover design. People may be attracted buy some in shops but they are unlikely to buy it if they don't know the artist. However, if they are attracted by it online, they will be able to listen and try it out for free so people are more likely to listen to an album based on the CD cover online as it docent cost them anything. On the other hand, I believe that before the internet CD covers were a big influence in buying CDs as they were pretty much all you could go from unlike today when you can research and find out details and listen for free.

WHAT MAKES A GOOD CD COVER?

To me, a good CD cover should be original and unique so people say 'that's that artists cover' rather than it being mistaken for other artists CD covers. The cover should be bright and bold to catch peoples attention and include something that people will remember and think about to keep it in their minds.

HOW MUCH OF THE COVER SHOULD THE ACT NAME AND TRACK NAME TAKE UP?

I believe that this should be something that varies depending on what the cover and design looks like and what the artist wants, as long as both are visible it doesn't matter in my opinion.

SHOULD THE COVER IMAGE BE THE ACT OF A PEICE OF DESIGN WORK?

Again, I believe this depends on the artist and can vary with what style they want. Personally, I think that this an image of the act is not a necessity as it is the Artists/bands name that people are more likely to recognise rather than an image of them.

SHOULD THERE BE A COMMON THEME BETWEEN THE 4 PANELS OR 4 INDIVIDUAL IMAGES?

I think that there should be a theme between the 4 panels as it looks smoother and more attractive. If each is a different colour for example, then it looks tacky and unattractive to me.

WHAT SHOULD BE INCLUDED ON THE INSIDE PANELS AND THE BACK PANEL?

I believe there should be a few things on the inside and back panels, these include:
- The tracks included with the CD
- Details about the tracks and act
- Tour details if needed
- Any promotions
- Links to digital copies
- Names of other CDs/Albums by the act

DO YOU LIKE TO SEE THE LYRICS INCLUDED?

I personally don't mind if they do because I believe that you can learn and know the words just from listening. However, if a book of lyrics is included inside I wouldn't complain.

SHOULD THE ACTS SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNTS BE ATTACHED TO THE DIGIPAK SOMEWHERE?

I believe that these things should be included with lots of other online links as technology and the internet is such a big part of peoples lives nowadays.

SHOULD THE IMAGES INCLUDED LINK TO THE TRACK, GENRE OF MUSIC, NAME OF TRACK ETC?

I don't think that this is a necessity as some of the most famous Cd covers do not include any of these.  However, I believe that these are good things to link it with as it gives the audience an insight into the tracks and may attract them to buy.

IS THE CHOICE OF FONT AND TEXT COLOUR IMPORTANT?

This is very important as this is what attracts many people to the CD, if it is tacky then people are a lot less likely to want to go and pick it up.
